A sundog is a creature of light, ice and geometry, a cousin of rainbows. When the sun is low on the horizon and appears to have one or usually two dusky companion suns, sometimes surrounded by wispy rainbow arcs, that's a sundog. It happens when sunlight passes through six-sided ice crystals, refracting at many angles but collecting into just enough lines from our line of vision to let us see what otherwise isn't really there.
As a primary installer and crew leader for Tennessee's oldest and largest full-time solar installation company, NABCEP-certified solar PV installer Gary Wolf worked on 40 residential and 20 commercial installations ranging from 2 to 50 kilowatts in size. He then taught solar installation for a workforce development training program he created at the Tennessee Technology Center at Dickson before forming Sundog Solar Energy LLC in late 2010. Sundog Solar had a busy 2011 with inspections, service and repairs, and solar PV installations, on and off grid.
