Mulching garden bed provides a little extra help for shrubs, trees, and perennial gardens.

Mulch comes in all sorts of colors and sizes. Some mulch is organic materials such as pine bark, chopped leaves or shredded, and wood chips. A thin layer of mulch will help to prevent compacted soil from heavy rains; moderate moisture and temperature levels in the soil and suppress surface weeds. Utilizing mulch will be an asset to your plantings and your garden landscape.

1. Mulching around shrubs and trees
With out grass or weeds being a competition your trees, shrubs, and plants will grow better. Apply a layer from 2- to 4-inches thick around new plantings. To promote healthy roots, you need a consistent exchange of air and water—so don’t mulch too deeply. Depending on the size of the tree or shrub, the mulched area could range from 3- to- 6-feet in diameter. Do not pile mulch up into mulch ‘volcanoes’ as this can harbor rodents and encourage tree base rot.

Winterize Evergreens & Plants

With the crazy high wind we seem to endure, it causes the branches to rub and snap. The excruciating low temperatures can even kill small shrubbery and plants. When you sheet and stake your evergreens it prevents snow build up on a branch, in which cause the branch to sag down.
